Tokyo has one of the most extensive and punctual public transport systems in the world, operated by multiple companies that integrate seamlessly.
Metro and Subway
- Tokyo Metro: 9 lines (Ginza, Marunouchi, Hibiya, Tozai, Chiyoda, Yurakucho, Hanzomon, Namboku, Fukutoshin)
- Toei Subway: 4 lines (Asakusa, Mita, Shinjuku, Oedo) — run by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government
- Hours: Approximately 5:00 to midnight daily
JR East
The JR Yamanote Line is the iconic loop line connecting Tokyo’s major centres (Tokyo, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ikebukuro, Ueno). Other JR lines include the Chuo Line (rapid to west Tokyo) and the Keihin-Tohoku Line.
Fares (2026)
- Metro/Toei minimum single ride: ¥180
- JR minimum ride: ¥160
- Tokyo Subway Ticket (Metro + Toei): ¥1,000 (24h), ¥1,500 (48h), ¥2,000 (72h) — passport required for tourists
- JR Tokunai Pass (inside 23 wards): ¥870/day
How to Pay
- IC cards (Suica/PASMO): ¥500 deposit + top-up. Tap in/out at all gates. Works on trains, buses, and convenience stores. Mobile Suica available on iPhone/
- Contactless credit cards: Since March 2026, 11 operators accept Visa, Mastercard, Amex, and JCB tapped directly at gates on Metro, Toei, and private railways. JR East not yet included.
- Single-ride tickets available at vending machines (cash only).
Airport Transfer
- Narita (NRT): N’EX ¥3,140–3,330 (55–80 min), Skyliner ¥2,580 (41 min to Ueno), Keisei Access Express ¥1,280 (70 min)
- Haneda (HND): Keikyu Line ¥330 (13 min to Shinagawa), Tokyo Monorail ¥520 (18 min to Hamamatsucho)
Taxis and Ride-sharing
Taxis are abundant but expensive. Flag-fall starts at about ¥420–500. Uber in Tokyo mostly hails regular taxis. Apps like GO and DiDi are popular for taxi-hailing. For groups of 4+, taxis can be practical for short trips.
