  • Toei Subway: 4 lines (Asakusa, Mita, Shinjuku, Oedo) — run by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government
  • Hours: Approximately 5:00 to midnight daily

JR East

The JR Yamanote Line is the iconic loop line connecting Tokyo’s major centres (Tokyo, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ikebukuro, Ueno). Other JR lines include the Chuo Line (rapid to west Tokyo) and the Keihin-Tohoku Line.

  • JR minimum ride: ¥160

How to Pay

  • IC cards (Suica/PASMO): ¥500 deposit + top-up. Tap in/out at all gates. Works on trains, buses, and convenience stores. Mobile Suica available on iPhone/
  • Contactless credit cards: Since March 2026, 11 operators accept Visa, Mastercard, Amex, and JCB tapped directly at gates on Metro, Toei, and private railways. JR East not yet included.
  • Single-ride tickets available at vending machines (cash only).

Airport Transfer

Taxis and Ride-sharing

Taxis are abundant but expensive. Flag-fall starts at about ¥420–500. Uber in Tokyo mostly hails regular taxis. Apps like GO and DiDi are popular for taxi-hailing. For groups of 4+, taxis can be practical for short trips.
