Parking in Tokyo is among the most expensive and restricted in the world. Tourists are strongly advised to use the excellent public transport system instead.
On-Street Parking
- Maximum 60 minutes in most areas (some zones 20 or 40 minutes)
- Cost: approximately ¥300 per pre-paid ticket
- Extremely limited availability in central Tokyo
- No overnight on-street parking allowed
Private Parking Lots
- Central Tokyo: ¥100–¥500 per 30 minutes
- Monthly parking: ¥30,000–¥80,000+ per month
- Many lots close overnight
Proof-of-Parking Rule (Shako Shomeisho)
To register a vehicle in Tokyo, you must prove you have off-street parking. This rule effectively limits car ownership to those with dedicated parking.
Parking Fines
Fines are steep and enforcement is strict. Illegal parking can result in towing and significant penalties.
Recommendation
Do not drive in central Tokyo. The transit system is faster, cheaper, and more convenient. If you must rent a car for day trips outside the city, book parking in advance through your hotel.
